The Role of the Superior Order GLCM in the Characterization and Recognition of the Liver Tumors from Ultrasound Images

چکیده
The hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent malignant liver tumor. It often has a similar visual aspect with the cirrhotic parenchyma on which it evolves and with the benign liver tumors. The golden standard for HCC diagnosis is the needle biopsy, but this is an invasive, dangerous method. We aim to develop computerized, noninvasive techniques for the automatic diagnosis of HCC, based on information obtained from ultrasound images. The texture is an important property of the internal organ tissues, able to provide subtle information about the pathology. We previously defined the textural model of HCC, consisting in the exhaustive set of the relevant textural features, appropriate for HCC characterization and in the specific values of these features. In this work, we analyze the role that the superior order Grey Level Cooccurrence Matrices (GLCM) and the associated parameters have in the improvement of HCC characterization and automatic diagnosis. We also determine the best spatial relations between the pixels that lead to the highest performances, for the third, fifth and seventh order GLCM. The following classes will be considered: HCC, cirrhotic liver parenchyma on which it evolves and benign liver tumors.

Automatic classification of Non-alcoholic fatty liver using texture features from ultrasound images
Background: Accurate and early detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver, which is a major cause of chronic diseases is very important and is vital to prevent the complications associated with this disease. Ultrasound of the liver is the most common and widely performed method of diagnosing fatty liver. However, due to the low quality of ultrasound images, the need for an automatic and intelligent...
متن کاملAutomatic Classification of Benign And Malignant Liver Tumors In Ultrasound Images
Introduction: Differentiation of benign and malignant liver tumors is very important for finding appropriate treatment procedure. Human eyes sometime are not able to diagnose the type of liver tumor. Texture analysis is considered as a suitable method to increase the diagnostic power of medical images. In this study texture analysis is employed in order to classification of ben...
متن کاملAutomated differentiation of benign and malignant liver tumors by Ultrasound Images
Background & Aims: Early detection and reliable differentiation of benign and malignant liver tumors could lead to improved cure rate and costs. Ultrasound image (US) is a convenient medical imaging method for interpreting liver tumors. Visual inspection of ultrasound images sometimes is combined with error and needs biopsy to confirm whether a tumor would be benign or malignant. The aim of thi...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Brightness Changes in Ultrasound Images due to Temperature Variations in Liver Tissue during Radiofrequency Ablation
Introduction: one of the minimally invasive methods of treatmenting liver malignancies is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) which can be applied to primary or secondary tumors. Nevertheless, the disease recurrence is probable after RFA application partially due to the inadequate capability of temperature monitoring of the target tissue and visualizing the thermal damage. The goal of this work was t...

Assessment of pavement distresses is one of the important parts of pavement management systems to adopt the most effective road maintenance strategy. In the last decade, extensive studies have been done to develop automated systems for pavement distress processing based on machine vision techniques. One of the most important structural components of computer vision is the feature extraction met...
